Digital identity and the quantified-self

Digital identity on Strava is constructed through the continual act of athletes uploading representations of their physical activities. The measurable and analysable aspect of an athlete’s identity, defined through self-quantified data, is subjectively framed by written titles, descriptions, photos and the interaction between athletes.

From a personal perspective, I found this an interesting article to research and write because it required me to consider my relationship with social media and my resistance to datafication. Initially, the physical data exposed through activity tracking such as my location, weight and heart rate might be seen as ultimately personal. Alternatively, the way I describe an activity, the photos I choose to attach (or not), who I rode with or who ‘liked’ the activity might be considered to be more personal.
